Tai Chi
April 1, 2025 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am
First Presbyterian Church, 27 Albany St, Cazenovia, NY 13035, USA The Tuesday morning Cazenovia Tai Chi group has been meeting for many years. Each class is a separate entity that covers all relevant material so newcomers can fit right in. Simple exercises are introduced each week that can be practiced while attending to one’s daily activities.
A short series of movements, as well as explanation of their application to daily activities are covered.
The class is sponsored by CASA at no cost. Anyone over 55 in the Cazenovia School District is welcome.
We will be meeting in the handicapped-accessible Meeting House at the Cazenovia Presbyterian Church on Albany St. from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays.
Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art now being practiced as a non-competitive exercise that is gaining popularity worldwide for its numerous quality of life benefits. Accredited ongoing research is confirming that the slow rhythmic movements provide the same benefits as Western style exercise.
Its low-impact quality is favored by seniors and its performance enhancement appeals to young athletes. At Tai Chi’s core one finds the principles of all human movement.
Through practice, those principles can be applied to any activity. To the observer, Tai Chi appears to be stylized choreography. It is how the choreography is animated that makes Tai Chi unique as an exercise system. The trademark flowing quality is the result of self-guided relaxation and awareness.

Sound Healing
Sound Healing
April 29, 2025 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
What is Sound Healing?
Sound is an ancient healing medium used for well-being for thousands of years from all around the globe. It has been used and continues to be used to bring people from distressed states to relaxed, aware presence.
Sound is vibration and vibration is not only heard by our ears, but also by our cells. Our skin, bones and the water within us conduct sound waves. Every cell membrane in our body has external antennas which vibrate like little tuning forks in response to the vibrational input from our environments. Sound when utilized consciously and intentionally has the potential to soothe the nervous system, quiet and focus the mind, settle emotions, relieve pain and more. It heals us on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. The late Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, past Director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical Center in NY said “Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.” He wrote the book “Sounds of Healing”. More recent research has proven that higher vibrational frequencies can heal any imbalance in the body, either in the cells, bones, nerves, and even stem cells.
The power of sacred music raises our vibrational frequency, brings us to harmony and creates unity. This happens by affecting the Vagus nerve to create a parasympathetic response in the body, which causes the release of hormones to decrease stress, anxiety and create relaxation. When one hears the sound frequencies, the cells become attuned to that frequency and cause perfect harmony within the body. Everything lines up for optimal functioning. This is why the body can heal disruptions in cellular activity. The most important principle of sound healing is Resonance. Initially, the sound will resonate with the distortion or dysfunction that is present in the body and its field, then through the production of a stronger, more coherent frequency, it entrains the body to a more coherent expression, to its most beneficial state.
The soothing sound wave experience uses the vibrational frequencies of crystal bowls, metal bowls, chimes, bells and tuning forks to create a gentle bath of sound. The intention is to restore the body, mind and spirit to a sense of balance and harmony. Benefits include quieting the mind, decreasing stress and anxiety, improving sleep, releasing physical and emotional pain, and altering consciousness. The frequencies help to shift our brain waves to a more relaxed and receptive state where healing can occur, therefore creating a deeper sense of peace and well-being.
Modern Uses of Sound Healing
Modern medicine utilizes the power of sound through practices such as:
• Lithotripsy: the use of sound pulses to break up kidney stones
• Ultrasound: which is used both diagnostically and therapeutically
